**Introduction (10 minutes):**
1. **Greeting and Attendance:** Start by greeting the class and taking attendance.
2. **Engage:** Show the students a world map or a globe. Ask them what they see and if they know what it is used for.
3. **Discussion:** Explain briefly about maps and their uses. Introduce the main components of a map: compass rose, map key, and map grid.
**Instruction (15 minutes):**
1. **Compass Rose:** Show an image of a compass rose. Explain the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West.
2. **Map Key:** Show the students a sample map key/legend and explain its purpose.
3. **Map Grid:** Explain the concept of a map grid (rows and columns) for locating places easily on a map.
**Activity (20 minutes):**
1. **Hands-On Activity:** Provide each student with a blank worksheet that has a simple map outline, a compass rose, and a map key template.
- **Step 1:** Ask students to draw a compass rose on their map and label the cardinal directions.

- **Step 3:** They will create their own map key on the worksheet, aligning it with the symbols they used.
- **Step 4:** Introduce a simple grid on the map (numbered rows and lettered columns) and practice identifying locations using the grid.
**Review and Discussion (10 minutes):**
1. **Review:** Recap the key points: compass rose, map key, map grid, and importance of maps.
2. **Discussion:** Invite a few students to share their maps with the class. Let them explain where they placed certain symbols and how they used their map key.
3. **Q&A:** Allow students to ask any questions they have about maps and geography.
**Conclusion (5 minutes):**
1. **Summarize:** Summarize what was learned during the lesson.
2. **Homework:** Optional – give students a simple map-related worksheet to complete at home.
3. **Closing:** Compliment the students on their creativity and effort. End with a brief preview of the next lesson topic.
**Assessment:**
- Observe students during the activity to ensure they understand the concepts.
- Review their worksheets to check for correct use of the compass rose, map key, and map grid.
- Participation in discussion and ability to answer questions about maps and geography.
